EC taking all measures to prevent misuse of media

Election Commission today said that all measures were being taken to ensure that media platforms were not misused during elections.

Briefing media here today, Deputy Election Commissioner Umesh Sinha said social media platforms have also laid down voluntary Code of Ethics for the forthcoming general elections.

The commission said, 23 thousand complaints were registered on its C-Vigil app. It said, 60 per cent of them were found correct and action was taken on them. The poll body said, it has seized unaccounted cash, illicit liquor, drugs, gold and freebies worth around 673 crore rupees since the model code of conduct came into effect.

The Commission also announced that three BJP candidates in the Arunachal Pradesh assembly election have been elected unopposed as no other candidates are in the fray from the three seats.

The three assembly constituencies are Dirang, Yachuli and Along (East). Briefing media, Deputy Election Commissioner, Chandra Bhushan Kumar said, from Dirang seat, three nominations were made out of which two candidates withdrew their nominations.

He said, two candidates filed their nominations each on Yachuli and Along (East) and after the scrutiny, one nomination in each seat was rejected.

The commission said 616 valid nominations were filed for the first phase and 631 nominations for the 2nd phase. Around one crore new voters were added in the last four to five weeks. For the first time, VVPATs are being deployed in the Lok Sabha Polls across the country.
