GURUGRAM: Cashing in on the notoriety of the Kaushal gang, 10 days ago, another gang of kidnappers abducted a Gurgaon doctor (30) who is the son of another doctor (56), posing as members of Kaushal’s gang, and extracted a ransom of Rs 55 lakh from him.

The incident came to light when the doctor filed a complaint on Tuesday evening at Civil Lines police station, against which an FIR has been registered against unidentified persons under sections 364A (kidnapping for ransom) and 34 (common intention) of IPC.

Sources said STF teams are probing the case and have already nabbed over five suspects, though neither STF nor police have confirmed this. The sources also said the suspects have confessed to using Kaushal’s name to strike fear in the targets and also mislead police.

Sources also confirmed while the Kaushal gang was not involved, the accused gang is also a notorious one, some of whose members bear rewards on their heads and are wanted by cops.

K K Rao, the IG of STF, said his teams are on the job and that he expected the picture to get clear soon. “We have collected vital clues and the accused will be arrested soon. We’re close to arresting the accused, who can’t escape,” said Rao. Police commissioner Muhammad Akil said local police and STF teams are conducting raids in search of the accused.

The father-son duo of doctors own two hospitals — one in Rewari and another in Gurgaon. In December 2018, the Kaushal gang had open fired at the latter, seeking protection money.

According to the FIR, the father and son duo paid regular visits to their Rewari hospital.

Late in the night on March 16, while the son was returning from Rewari, he was abducted from the Sector 29 area. “When he didn’t reach home by 10.30pm, and finding his phone switched off, we verbally informed police. Then, after midnight (March 17), we got a WhatsApp call from his number, in which a man sought the ransom. Scared, I handed over Rs 55 lakh near Kundli on GT Road that same day, and got my son back,” reads the complaint.

Sources claimed there were more than five members in the gang that abducted the young doctor while he was going to Sector 29 to meet a friend on his way home.

When he revealed his identity, they immediately decided to take advantage of the family’s past skirmish with the Kaushal gang, and copied the notorious gangster’s style of using WhatsApp to call for ransom. They even identified themselves as Kaushal gang members to scare the father.
