Unruly 'gypsy' tourists that made international headlines for wreaking havoc in New Zealand spoke a mysterious language and used their children as 'tools' to get free food, according to their deportation documents.

The British group outraged locals after dumping rubbish on Takapuna Beach in Auckland before threatening to 'mow down' a bystander in January.

They were served with deportation notices after a petty crime spree which saw them stealing from restaurants and shoplifting from a servo.

Now official documents detail exactly why authorities tried to remove the family from the country.

They state that a Burger King complained about a 'Scottish family' who were rude to customers and deliberately spilled drinks on their food before asking for a refund.

The children also shouted swear words through the speaker box at the drive-thru.

The Immigration NZ (INZ) papers, obtained by Stuff under the Official Information Act, also states the family used the children as 'tools' to get free food.

'The family would take a few bites from ordered food then wait about 30 mins and try to return it saying that it was cold,' INZ documents say.

'The family appear to use the children as tools in assisting with this and getting them to take old food from deserted tables then trying to demand a refund with the cold food.'

The deportation documents stated that the family was 'uncooperative' and wouldn't disclose any information.

They also told police they didn't have any phones, but were seen using them to contact other members of the family in a vehicle nearby.

'An unknown language was spoken (thought to be Shelta - a language used by Irish travellers) when the family was speaking amongst themselves and on the phone,' the documents say.

Previous incidents were also detailed in the INZ notes, including the incident at Takapuna Beach.

The tourists were also accused of leaving a cafe without paying, damaging their rented apartment and stealing a journalist's phone.

The British family arrived in New Zealand before Christmas.

Five members of the group were issued deportation notices but say they left the country 'of their own accord' in late January, including Barbara Doran, 53, Barbara Doran Junior, 17, Miley Doran, 18, Eileen Doran, 19, and Tina Cash, 26.

Landing back in the UK on January 27 at Heathrow Airport, they complained they had the 'holiday from hell' and had been 'tortured and condemned'.

Their stint of mayhem across New Zealand led to the group being labelled 'a*******' and 'trash' by Auckland Mayor Phil Goff.

There was even a  petition calling for their deportation which amassed thousands of signatures.

In a radio interview, Goff said: 'I've asked the council to follow up because I want to see them loaded with an infringement fine for trashing our country. They shouldn't even be here.'
