MUMBAI: An assistant inspector of Manickpur police station in Vasai was allegedly caught red-handed while accepting Rs 25,000 as bribe from a complainant who had filed a non-cognisable offence against a woman who, he claimed, had been harassing him.

Assistant police inspector Asif Baig (38) allegedly demanded Rs 50,000 from the complainant after threatening to make the woman file a cross-complaint against him.

The complainant approached officials of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Thane on Monday, alleging that-Baig was threatening to implicate him in a false case. The complainant agreed to pay the first instalment on Tuesday.

A trap was laid at the police station. The complainant claimed he had paid the money to Baig at around 11.28 pm when he was allegedly caught red-handed.
