PUNE: A 29-year-old businessman on Tuesday was tricked by two conmen who told him if he invested Rs40 lakh with them he would get Rs42 lakh in return, that too within just half-an-hour. He was left with a bag containing newspapers.
The businessman from Somatane near Talegaon, lodged an FIR with the Talegaon Dabhade police. The assistant police inspector Pramod Kshirsagar arrested Lalkar Zigare, a suspect from Sinhagad Road, under the relevant sections of the IPC. He was the middleman between the complainant and the two fraudsters.
The two conmen are still on the run with the cash. “We have launched a search for them,” Kshirsagar said.
The businessman is also a member of a political party. Zigare, who claimed to be a financial consultant, approached the complainant on March 22 and told him that during the Lok Sabha elections the latter may need notes of Rs100 denominations. “Zigare told the complainant he knew some people from Mumbai who would give him Rs100 notes at 7% interest rate,” Kshirsagar said.
On March 23, Zigare took the businessman to Mumbai. The businessman gave the two men Rs2 lakh who immediately returned Rs2.2 lakh to him in Rs100 notes.
Happy with the deal, the businessman agreed to invest more with them. “The suspects told him to invest Rs40 lakh and he would get Rs42 lakh in return immediately,” Kshirsagar said.
They told the businessman he need not come to Mumbai and that they would come to his house. They said the cash would be in his cupboard till they returned with Rs100 notes of Rs42 lakh.
The complainant took loans and even mortgaged gold ornaments of his family members and collected Rs40 lakh in Rs2,000 notes.
On Tuesday, the duo came to the complainant’s bungalow with a suitcase and bag. “They counted the money and kept it in the suitcase along with the bag. But the suitcase couldn’t be locked. So they removed the bag and locked the suitcase. In all this, the businessman got distracted,” Kshirsagar said.
The duo told the complainant to keep the suitcase in his cupboard and lock it and took the keys from him. “They said they would return within half-an-hour with Rs42 lakh and left his bungalow,” Kshirsagar said.
When they did not return and their cellphones too were not reachable, the businessman opened the cupboard with another key. “When he opened the suitcase, he found newspapers instead of the money,” Kshirsagar said.
