Pilots flying an Airbus Beluga cargo jet diverted the plane after suffering a technical problem in the skies over North Wales.

The Beluga ST 3 was flying from Hamburg to Broughton this morning.

As the plane was preparing to land at the Hawarden Airport runway at around 11.30am it developed a "technical problem".

The experienced pilots initially circled the runway four times before taking the decision to divert to Liverpool.

The plane landed safely just after midday.

Airbus spokesman said: “Beluga 3, en route from Hamburg to Hawarden, developed a technical problem.

"The aircraft circled the aerodrome briefly before the pilot took the decision to divert to Liverpool John Lennon Airport as a precaution, where it landed safely.”

It is expected that Airbus engineers will now inspect the plane at Liverpool before it is flown back to Toulouse.
