LUCKNOW: In wake of city's poor show in Swachh Bharat Survey, Lucknow Municipal Corporation has now decided to hand over the charge of sweeping roads to private contractors. The corporation would rope in private players to clean roads in 34 wards of Lucknow including Gomtinagar, Jankipuram, Mahanagar, Nishatganj, Aashiayana and Alambagh. The project would be launched on a pilot basis from April 1 and if successful, would be extended to all 110 wards of the city.
LMC will also collect feedback from citizens every month about the contractors' performance.
If the corporation is not satisfied with the residents' feedback, the contractor will not only lose the contract but would also be blacklisted.
Municipal commissioner Indramani Tripathi said, "We have told contractors that they would be have to pay a hefty fine before being blacklisted, if citizens are not impressed with their work."
LMC's initiative was inspired by Pune Municipal Corporation's experience with a similar exercise. Pune bagged the 37th rank among 406 Indian cities in this year's cleanliness survey.
The corporation's decision to hire private contractors was driven by Lucknow's poor performance in the Swachhta survey since the last three years.
