NPP contender for Nagaland assembly bypoll goes ‘missing’
Prabin Kalita | TNN | Mar 28, 2019, 06:06 ISTGuwahati: The National People’s Party (NPP) candidate for byelection to Nagaland’s Aonglenden assembly seat, O Tinu Lkr, has been reported ‘missing’ since Tuesday.
The party, headed by Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma, has filed an FIR and written to the Election Commission, alleging foul play. NPP walked out of the ruling People’s Democratic Alliance of Nationalist Democratic People’s Party (NDPP) and BJP in Nagaland recently. The two MLAs it had in the Nagaland assembly merged with NDPP, which chief minister Neiphiu Rio heads.
“It is to bring to the notice of your esteemed office a matter of grave concern, one that blatantly attempts to violate the Model Code of Conduct and trample upon the Constitutional right to free and fair elections,” Ato Yepthomi, president of NPP’s Nagaland unit, wrote to the Chief Election Commissioner.
“The National People’s Party (NPP) Nagaland State Unit has fielded Shri O Tinu Lkr as the Party candidate for the 26th Aonglenden Assembly Constituency Bye-Election 2019, to the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly. Since 26th March 2019 the said Party candidate Shri. 0. Tinu Lkr has been missing and given the magnitude of the outcome of this Bye-Election with possibility of directly affecting the incumbent government, there is every reason to believe that that there is foul play in this matter,” Yepthomi added, seeking immediate inquiry.
The Mokokchung district unit of NPP, under whose jurisdiction the Aonglenden assembly constituency falls, also filed an FIR with the Mokokchung police on Wednesday.
