MUMBAI: After questioning nearly a hundred autorickshaw drivers, the MIDC police on Thursday tracked down a man accused of sexually abusing a minor girl at Andheri East. The accused, Mukesh Yadav, was asleep inside an auto near Pinky Cinema when a police team caught hold of him.
According to the police, the five-year-old victim lives with her parents at Andheri. On Tuesday night, she was out playing with friends when Yadav approached her. He was not acquainted with her and offered to buy her an ice-cream. The unsuspecting child went along with him.
Yadav took her to a row of bushes across a drain at Goni Nagar where he sexually abused her. The girl screamed which alerted locals. A group of men dashed into the bushes. Yadav had left the weeping girl and was trying to flee. There was a scuffle and two residents managed to grab Yadav by the collar. But he managed to wriggle out of their grip and escaped. But, by then, the residents had got a good look at him. They later told investigators that the accused was a hunchback with thinning hair and very few teeth.
"We got an identity sketch prepared on the basis of the description. An informant told us that the accused had been previously spotted sleeping in autorickshaws. So, we quizzed over 100 auto drivers," said senior inspector Nitin Alaknure, MIDC police. On Thursday, the police were informed that the accused was spotted in the area near Pinky Cinema. After an hour-long search, Yadav was tracked down. He was hauled to the MIDC police station where he was booked under the stringent POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act.
Police said Yadav had migrated to Mumbai from Uttar Pradesh in 1992. He lived in Nala sopara and was employed as a watchman at a society in Andheri East. He earned a salary of Rs 9,000 per month, half of which he sent to his family in UP and spent the rest.
