Ludhiana: Amarbir Singh alias Lalli Cheema, a member of the Sukha Kahlon gang, and his accomplices had come to the city on Tuesday to stay for one night at a friend’s place in a village nearby. They stopped at a juice vendor when the police tried to nab them. Soon, an exchange of fire ensued between cops and the gang, said police on Wednesday.
According to information, after the cross-firing — in which Lalli Cheema also sustained a bullet injury in his leg —the police managed to nab Cheema, who tried to damage his mobile by chewing it. The cops then hit him on his jaw, resulting in a broken jaw.

On the complaint of sub-inspector Kirpal Singh of Organised Crime Control Unit (OCCU), Dehlon police have registered a case under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), and 34 (act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC, and Arms Act against Cheema and Kuldeep Singh. The police on Wednesday also produced Kuldeep in the district court, which has announced three days police remand. On the other hand, Cheema has been admitted in Rajinder Hospital in Patiala for treatment. The police have also recovered .30 bore pistol with three live cartridges and a 7.65mm pistol with five live cartridges.

Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, IGP-OCCU said: “Lalli Cheema is a member of Sukha Kahlon gang. Last year, when he threatened to kill Congress MLA from Sultanpur Lodhi, Navtej Singh Cheema, since then we were after him. We got information about his movement towards Ludhiana, and my team gave them a chase. Our team members have shown bravery in arresting the duo, as Cheema was firing in a public place. Considering our own safety, and the security of people present there, SI Kirpal Singh put his hand on the chamber of his pistol to prevent him from firing. In the process, he sustained a minor hand injury on his hand.”

Delhon police station SHO inspector Dharambir Singh said: “So far, it has been revealed that the accused were planning to spend a night in a village near Ludhiana.”

MAN DETAINED, WEAPON SEIZED

The Ludhiana Rural police on Wednesday detained a man from Jodhan village, and recovered a weapon and live cartridges from him. The police got information that Cheema, along with his accomplice, was supposed to meet this man on Tuesday, but before that, Cheema got arrested in Dehlon.
