Achyuta declares assets worth Rs 5L

Bhubaneswar: Achyuta Samanta, the BJD’s Lok Sabha candidate from Kandhamal, and founder of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) and the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences has declared assets worth Rs five lakh in his affidavit filed with the election commission on Wednesday.
He declared an annual income of Rs 25,74,130 lakh for the 2017-18 fiscal, which was marginally more than the Rs 23.52 lakh he had shown in his income tax return in 2013-14. His affidavit also mentions that he has Rs 20,500 in cash.

Sources said while the current valuation of the institutions he founded is over Rs 10,000 crore, none of the properties are in his name.

According to the affidavit, Samanta has property worth Rs 1.90 lakh and movable assets of Rs 10.54 lakh. He has 0.310 acres of agriculture land worth Rs 97,000 and 1.155 decimal of non-agricultural land valued at Rs 93,000. This land, Samanta said, he inherited from his father.


He further claimed to have a deposit of Rs 2,88,120 in his savings bank account and has invested Rs 44,760 in bonds and shares. He has insurance policies and postal savings of Rs 7,01,342, the affidavit revealed. Besides, he is a bachelor and still stays in a rented house.


Samanta, a native of Kalarabanka village of Cuttack district, comes from a very humble background. He lost his father when he was four. Amid trying circumstances, his mother brought up seven children, including Samanta. He completed his post-graduation degree in chemistry and joined a private college as a lecturer in Bhubaneswar. He also funded the education of his siblings.
