NEW DELHI: Five days after TOI reported how gangsters were not only running extortion rackets from jail but also issuing kill orders, Delhi Police’s Special Cell arrested two sharpshooters who were finalising plans to murder two real estate businessmen of the National Capital Region.

The arrested men have been identified as Atiq and Balkishan, and they purportedly belong to the gang of UP thug Aman Yadav, also known as Chanderbhan. Following this, the cops raided the Mandoli campus of Tihar Jail and took Yadav into custody. His cell in jail no. 11 was searched and a diary containing the details of prospective victims and gang members was recovered.

DCP (Special Cell) Pramod Kushwaha said that two pistols and a Yamaha R15 bike, which were to be used in the execution of the murder plans, were recovered.

The conspiracy was unearthed after the cops intercepted two phone calls among Yadav, Atiq and Balkishan. Yadav was using a number 9582**5449 while in prison. When he called Atiq on his number 956**12414, police eavesdropped on it. They were also able to intercept another call the following day when Yadav spoke to Balkishan on his number 971**18052 and learnt that the places frequented by the two targeted builders had been reconnoitred.

“Special Cell, being one of the units mandated to prevent organised crime in Delhi, has been monitoring the activities of suppliers of illegal arms and ammunition through sources,” Kushwaha said on Tuesday. “A team led by ACPs Lalit Mohan Negi and Hriday Bhushan had learnt through reliable sources that some of the gang leaders lodged in jail had been procuring sophisticated weapons to eliminate rivals and to establish supremacy in the area where they run their extortion networks.”

After intercepting the calls, police realised that Yadav had tasked his associates with eliminating two builders. “The instructions given by Yadav from jail were clear: kill both the persons without wasting much time,” Kushwaha added.

The cops registered a case and formed a team led by inspector Sunil Rajain and after identifying the two shooters, arrested Balkishan and Atiq in a swift operation. Atiq had been released from Tihar on bail on February 27 after being behind bars for 32 months. The cops then went in pursuit of Yadav based on the disclosures made by the arrested pair.

Yadav has a long criminal history. He was arrested for murder in 2009 and was subsequently arrested six more times on charges of murders, robberies and extortions. He has been in Mandoli jail since 2014 where he was sent for the murder of a man named Badal. “While in jail, Yadav has been arrested twice — in an extortion case and for attempt to murder,” Kushwaha disclosed.
