Heat takes toll, steep rise in illnesses

Surat: The sharp rise in temperature in the last three days has started taking toll on people’s health.
Government hospitals, health centres and private clinics are seeing a steep rise in the number of patients complaining of dehydration, nausea, stomach ache, headache and uneasiness. The 108 emergency services too have reported around 20% jump in heat-related aliments.

A doctor from the health department of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) said, “ Our system notifying number of heat-stroke patients will be fully operational by March 28. However, the increase in number of patients at SMIMER and other health centres indicate that the sudden rise in mercury has started affecting people. Majority of the victims are senior citizens and children below 12 years of age.”

The Surat Municipal Corporation has sounded an orange alert considering the heat conditions.

An official from SMIMER hospital said , “On an average, we treat around 350 patients in a day in outdoor patient department (OPD). However, on Tuesday alone, the number shot up to 430.This cases are mainly of headache, vomiting and uneasiness. Those moving out for work in afternoon hours suffer from such illness in extreme heat conditions.”


In New civil Hospital (NCH), an average of 550-600 cases are treated by medicine department daily. However, this number too has shot up to 750-800 in the last two days.


An official from NCH said , “Generally OPD gets over by 12 noon but since last few days, we have been running late till 1.30 to 2 pm. Large number of heat-related cases have started coming in.”


A private practitioner in Udhna said, “By evening, I have at least 20-25 patients complaining of stomach pain, vomiting , indigestion and uneasiness. All these people work in the open or ride a bike or cycle in afternoon hours and suffer from heat ailments.”
