HUBBALLI: The Rs2 lakh compensation announced by the state government to the next of kin who died in the Dharwad building collapse has not gone down well with many. Reason: The compensation handed out to those killed in the Sulwadi temple and Mandya bus tragedy was much more, Rs 5 lakh.
Netizens took to social media expressing their ire wondering if life is more precious in other parts of the state.
Speaking to TOI, Harshavardhan Sheelavant, who lost three of his relatives in the crash, felt the compensation was discriminatory. “When we asked chief minister H D Kumaraswamy about the compensation during his visit to Dharwad, he cited the model code of conduct,” he said.
Senior advocate and activist B D Hiremath has warned of boycotting the election if the government fails to sanction the minimum compensation of Rs five lakh to the kin of the deceased.
“How could the government, which had sanctioned Rs 5 lakh for victims of Sulwadi temple tragedy and Mandya bus accident, reduce it to Rs two lakh for Dharwad victims?” he questioned.
He warned of a massive NOTA campaign in Dharwad district if the government does not reverse the compensation amount.
Amrut Ijari, convener, Mahadayi, Kalasa-Banduri Horata Samiti, said that NK has always been neglected and discriminated. “Regret to know that it’s being discriminated in death also. As victims in Dharwad tragedy were poor and from lower middle class, the government should compensate them with Rs 25 lakh and a government job,” he demanded.
Activists like Vikas Soppin see a conspiracy. “As HDK himself has said many times that people of North Karnataka did not vote for JD(S), it may be one of the reasons for the discrimination. Can’t blame the people if they feel they are being discriminated against,” he opined.
District minister RV Deshpande could not be reached for comments.
