The bomb squad has been called to a federal MP's home after a suspicious package was found.

The package was found at the home of David Gillespie, Nationals MP for Lyne, at his home on the New South Wales mid north coast on Wednesday, 2GB reported.

A cylinder was found at the front gate of the property together with a flag with foreign writing on it.

Mr Gillespie said he is OK and recognises the writing on the flag, believing it to be Latin.

A NSW Police spokeswoman said police were conducting an 'investigation at Sancrox', west of Port Macquarie.

'Officers responded to a call for assistance, and have established a perimeter outside the home as they attempt to identify the device,' she said.
