Mumbai: Fake packers and movers company busted, 2 held for cheating

Mumbai: The Powai police have arrested a duo, Ramankumar Sharma (23) and Vikas Sharma (23), for cheating people by posing as employees of a bogus packers and movers company, claiming to transport four wheelers across the country at cheap prices and then getting away with their cars. Police investigations revealed that the duo had cheated three others using the same modus operandi.

According to the police, the complainant, H.C Lalnaghakanniani (34), who is also the wife of a coast guard officer, wanted to send her Mahindra Scorpio car to her family friend at Guwahati. She then searched for a contact on Just Dial and came across Aggarwal All India Packers and Movers, which was run by the arrested duo.

After contacting the firm, the complainant was told that the the car shall be delivered to the destination within a week. Accordingly, on February 18, the duo reached the complainant’s residence and gave her a receipt of Rs 33,806 as transportation charges and left with the vehicle.

“A fortnight later when the vehicle was not delivered to Guwahati, the complainant visited the office address in Navi Mumbai where she learnt that the address was fake and her vehicle was stolen by the accused using bogus firm. She then approached Powai police station and registered a complaint against the accused persons,” said Navinchandra Reddy, deputy commissioner of police (zone 10)

During investigation, the phone numbers provided on the search engine showed numbers being active in Navi Mumbai. Based on the technical evidence, police traced the duo in Navi Mumbai and arrested them on Saturday. The accused were arrested and booked under relevant sections of the IPC for cheating.
