Nagpur: Taking serious note of reports about supply of ‘stale’ food to passengers, the divisional railway manager (DRM) Somesh Kumar on Wednesday asked Jan Ahar to shut down operations with immediate effect and also imposed a fine of Rs1 lakh on Jan Ahaar from where the packets were sold.
Though it was functional in the morning, by evening on Wednesday the outlet located on platform no. 1 had shut down operations.

“We have recommended complete closure of the IRCTC food outlet following complaint of poor quality food being supplied. Besides, there were some other irregularities related to maintenance and hygiene,” said senior divisional commercial manager (SrDCM) Krishnath Patil.

On Tuesday, 26 packets of stale food were given to children who were rescued by RPF men from the Danapur-Secunderabad Express. There was another complaint with the pantry car contractor selling spurious drinking water bottles.

Central Railway spokesperson SG Rao said, “The outlet has been closed with immediate effect as there were issues with drainage, cleanliness etc. We have asked IRCTC to undertake repairs first and reopen only after that.”

“The loopholes were picked up during inspection a day before Tuesday’s incident. Supply of stale food was the last straw,” Rao said.

Area manager of IRCTC Ahad Siddiqui denied that stale food was supplied. “There was problem with one of the food items which had foul smell. We immediately replaced all the 26 packets when the licensee was informed,” he said.

On how the stale food was being supplied by IRCTC, Siddiqui said, “The food was supplied around 3.40pm and was consumed at 5.30pm. Much also depends on how the food was handled. Had some passengers taken ill by consuming the food than it would have been a serious issue.”

According to railway sources, Delhi-based licensee Shri Siddhivinayak will have to pay the fine immediately else it will not be allowed to operate. They said a report was sent to chief commercial manager (CCM) in Mumbai Mumbai who endorsed the fine and closure. The IRCTC regional head quarters in Mumbai too has been informed about the decision.

Sources said Jan Ahaar outlets are known for supplying quality food at economical rates but passengers told TOI they have been overcharged by the outlet. “In a hurry to board the train, we have never lodged complaints,” many told TOI.

In another development, based on the complaint over spurious water being sold by the pantry car contractor and subsequent action by the IRCTC here, a report has been sent to South Central Railway (SCR) recommending action.
