HUBBALLI: Garbage dumping on the roadside has become a common practice in Hubballi and it has become more evident as HDMC officials are not clearing the waste citing election work.
HDMC officials say most of them have been assigned election work and it has affected regular works such as lifting garbage dumped on the roads. Residents say the problem is particularly severe in extension areas.

The deputy commissioner and other senior officials have told HDMC officials several times that election work should not hamper day to day affairs such as maintaining cleanliness in the city. However, the reality is very different. Garbage is being dumped on the roadside in many areas including Deshpande Nagar, Vijaynagar, Bhavani Nagar, Keshwapur and Naveen Park and in market areas such as Koppikar Road, Dajibanpeth and Janata Bazaar.

Due to lack of proper monitoring by the officials concerned has only doubled the garbage problem. When asked, senior HDMC officials say they are busy with election works and hence unable to visit their respective areas.

HDMC commissioner Shakeel Ahmed said “Everything was in order when I used to conduct city rounds and garbage lifting was proper. Because of election duty, I am not able to do city rounds. I will look into the garbage issue and sort it soon.”

He clarified that no health department worker was deployed for election duty and they must do their regular work. “Zonal assistant commissioners who are on election duty should ensure that regular works doesn’t get affected by insisting health department workers to monitor cleaning,” he said.

Ramesh S, a social worker said, “HDMC claims that garbage disposal and other works are being done effectively just because of the solid waste management programme and is spending huge sums of money. But the situation is worsening and mounds of garbage can be seen on the roadside in many localities. The officials should maintain cleanliness in the city and not avoid their work by citing election work.”
