Thai political parties to form democracy 'coalition' against junta

Thailand's Pheu Thai party said on Wednesday it had formed a “democratic front” with six other parties after a disputed election, claiming the opposition alliance had won a majority in the lower house of parliament and the right to try to form a government. However, the coalition would likely fall short of electing a prime minister, which requires a combined vote with the upper house of parliament, the Senate, which is entirely appointed by the military junta that in 2014 overthrew an elected Pheu Thai government.

Australian Ashleigh Barty beat women's world number two Petra Kvitova for the first time having gone into the clash 0-4. She will play Anett Kontaveit for a place in Saturday's final after the Estonian brought an end to Hsieh Su-Wei's impressive run with a 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory to reach the last four in South Florida for the first time.

The inland lake in Westgate Park in Melbourne, turns pink in warmer months thanks to a natural phenomenon. The pink hue happens in response to high salt levels, lots of sunlight and a lack of rainfall. Lake algae, which grows in the salt crust at the bottom of the lake produces a red pigment as part of its photosynthesis process.

Venezuela blackout leaves streets empty, school and work cancelled

Venezuela canceled work and school on March 26 as the second major blackout this month left streets mostly empty in Caracas and residents of the capital wondering how long power would be out amid a deepening economic and political crisis. The outage shuttered businesses, plunged the city's main airport into darkness and left commuters stranded in Caracas.
