CHENNAI: Two weeks after a group of men posing as police bundled a man off an MTC bus and robbed him of Rs 98 lakh, the Kilpauk police have arrested six people and seized around Rs 30 lakh from them.
The accused have been identified as Kalandar, Shadiq, Vinoth, Ramkumar, Ravikumar, and Raji. Kalandar is a native of Ramanathapuram while the others are locals.
Police said it was Shadiq, the victim’s colleague, who informed Kalandar, who was staying at a lodge in the city, about cash being transferred on a bus. Kalandar, in turn, hatched the plan with the others to rob the passenger.
Except Shadiq, the others have similar criminal cases pending against them. Their modus operandi is to pose as police and intercept men carrying large amounts of cash.
Based on a tip, a police team rushed to the city airport and arrested the suspects on Tuesday.
The incident happened on the night of March 9 when Gopinath of Thanjavur was on his way to the mofussil bus terminus in an MTC bus with the cash to hand over to his uncle Kannan in Trichy. A three-member gang, claiming to be policemen, boarded the bus at the Taylor’s Road bus stop and hand-cuffed Gopinath for carrying cash without documents. They took him in a car and left him at Vandalur before escaping with the cash.
