The Acharapakkam police on Tuesday booked a criminal case against Tamizhaga Vazhuvurimai Katchi (TVK) president T.Velmurugan and his driver under three sections of the Indian Penal Code for allegedly hurting, threatening, and abusing staff of the toll plaza at Athur near Acharapakkam in Kancheepuram district.

On Monday night, Mr. Velmurugan and his supporters were travelling in his car and were stopped at the toll plaza by the staff on duty.

His driver produced a card which was reportedly a permit to travel across the country. A quarrel broke out after the staff, a migrant worker, raised questions about the authenticity of the card.

The driver punched him, and the worker retaliated.

Mr. Velmurugan got down from the car and removed his footwear to attack the staff.

The scene was caught on the CCTV camera at the toll plaza.

Police officers who rushed to the spot conducted a preliminary enquiry with Mr. Velmurugan and others.

Based on a complaint from the staff at the toll plaza, the police registered a case under section 294 b (Uttering vulgar words in public place), 323 (Voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (i) (Criminal Intimidation) of the IPC.
