Writing’s On The Street: Truck Spills 5,500 Gallons Of Printer Ink On Highway

A semi-truck carrying 5,500 gallons (20,819 liters) of black printer ink crashed on an interstate highway in Atlanta, Georgia, blocking traffic for hours and resulting in a huge clean-up.

WSB-TV Atlanta reports that a car cut in front of the large semi-truck on I-285 just prior to I-20.

The car’s unexpected move caused the trucker to lose control of the vehicle and crash. The truck rolled onto its side and spilled roughly 40,000 lbs (18,000 kg) of printer ink across the southbound lanes of the interstate.

According to the report, local authorities were able to re-open the interstate after a few hours once sand and dirt was spread across the road to soak up the printer ink. However, it is reported that large ink stains were left across the highway and, in all likelihood, vehicles which drove over those parts probably have ink on their undercarriages and body panels.

While we’ve seen other truck crashes where items such as pizza and chocolate have been spilled, this incident is likely one of the most expensive of them all. Gizmodo reports that black printer ink is one of the most expensive liquids in the world (as anyone with a printer can attest – Ed) and that the lost ink may have been worth around $13 million – or more than two Bugatti Chiron Sport 100th anniversary editions.

So, if the next time you go to pick up a cartridge for your printer and find it costs more than before, you know who’s to blame…
