BHUBANESWAR: BJD’s Banki MLA Pravata Kumar Tripathy, an accused in the chit fund scam, has decided not to fight the forthcoming assembly polls.
The Banki legislator has communicated his decision to BJD president and chief minister Naveen Patnaik in a letter.
“In view of the case filed against me by the ulterior political motive and design of BJP which is in trial stage, I offer myself not to contest the coming general election, extending my support to you to pave the way for value based politics,” Tripathy noted in his letter.
Tripathy, a four-time legislator, also offered to work for party’s organisational activities and election campaign during the election.
The Banki legislator was arrested by the CBI in October 2014 for his alleged involvement in the multi-thousand crore chit fund scam related to Artha Tatwa company. He was later granted bail by the Orissa high court in March 2015.
Though BJD had suspended Tripathy after he was arrested, it was revoked in November 2017 after the Supreme Court rejected a CBI petition challenging bail relief granted to him by the Orissa high court.
The Banki MLA, in the letter, blamed BJP for implicating him intentionally in a chit fund scam. The BJP, however, rubbished Tripathy’s charges.
According to sources, BJD may field Tripathy’s son from Banki in the forthcoming assembly election.
