Former Manchester United midfielder Memphis Depay scored one and set up another for the Netherlands last night in an entertaining game against Germany.

Depay is a reported transfer target for United this summer, and he showed his former club what he still has to offer with an impressive performance in the Euro 2020 qualifier.

His contributions - including a lovely assist for rumoured United target Matthijs de Ligt - were not enough to prevent a 3-2 defeat for his country, but Depay's attacking performance will not have gone unnoticed at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, United and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have been linked with England international winger Callum Hudson-Odoi in the latest transfer gossip. Reports suggest United will join the race for the Chelsea youngster, if they are priced out of a rumoured move for Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho.

We'll have all the latest Man United news and transfer rumours coming from Old Trafford today.

United 'best fit' for Bale

Paul Merson believes a move to United would be the ‘best fit’ for Gareth Bale.

Speaking to the Daily Star, Merson said:

“Gareth Bale is good enough to play for any of the Premier League’s top six if he leaves Real Madrid – but how many would actually take him?

“Manchester City and Liverpool don’t need him and for them, it would be a lot of money to invest in someone of his age and with his injury record.

“But most of the clubs below them would love to take the risk if they could afford the transfer fee and wages.

“Manchester United looks like the best fit for him. They’ve tried to sign him before and it didn’t come off, but he’s always felt like their kind of player.

“They will be on the rebuild next season and there could be lots of ins and outs at Old Trafford. They are also one of the teams who could afford him.

“It’s probably worth the gamble if you’re United. But I don’t think Gareth Bale wins you the title if you’re United. They need more than that.”

Mike Phelan sends message about his future

United coach Mike Phelan says he would like to stay involved with Central Coast Mariners even if he remains at Old Trafford this summer.

“It’s just a case of how things develop over the next couple of months,” Phelan said on the FOX Football Podcast.

“It’s a busy time for Manchester United obviously, but the season is coming to an end in Australia so I think once decisions are made back over in England then I think we’ll open those discussions again with the Mariners and hopefully the partnership can continue. I think it’s a good one; it’s a nice one to be able to be associated with the Mariners, and obviously an association for the Mariners with Manchester United is always a nice thing.

“It’s all down to if’s and but’s right now, but I certainly would like to keep my interest at the Mariners.”

Phelan backs Solskjaer for United job

Mike Phelan believes Solskjaer is ready to take over full-time at United should the offer rise.

“Managing people is no different wherever you are,” he told the FOX Football Podcast.

“You try and get the best out of people, you try communicate well, and he’s got all those skills. It just so happens now that he’s got an opportunity at Manchester United, which he’s relishing.”

Has Mourinho aimed a sly dig at Pochettino?

Jose Mourinho has aimed a dig at managers who are praised for their philosophies, but says there is no point celebrating them if they don’t win trophies.

“I won titles everywhere I have been and I cannot run away from my mentality,” he told beIN Sports.

“Some coaches like to sell the idea of a philosophy, but you have to sell the philosophy after you win.

“if you win nothing, what is the point?

“if your team plays very well, your team wins, so I don’t like these contradictions we have in football nowadays.”

Messi injury update

Lionel Messi should still be fit to face United in the Champions League after he withdrew from the Argentina side to face Morocco on Tuesday.

The Barcelona legend played the full 90 minutes in Argentina’s surprise 3-1 defeat at the hands of Venezuela on Friday, and it emerged afterwards that he had suffered a groin injury.

However, Spanish publication Marca suggest Messi will be available for Barcelona’s next match, when they host Espanyol on 30 March.

United 'face battle' for Andersen

United will face intense competition from Arsenal and Tottenham if they are to sign Joachim Andersen this summer.

CalcioMercato suggest the 22-year-old could be allowed to leave Sampdoria this summer but it remains to be seen where he would move to.

Utd fans want two transfer targets from Netherlands vs Germany

Two rumoured Manchester United transfer targets scored for the Netherlands in their entertaining Euro 2020 qualifier vs Germany on Sunday night.

Trailing 2-0 at the break, Ajax defender Matthjis de Ligt flicked home a fine Memphis Depay cross to reduce the deficit, before the former United midfielder got on the scoresheet himself with a low finish past Manuel Neuer.

United have a buy-back clause on Depay, and fans have been keenly following his progress at Lyon since leaving Old Trafford following a difficult spell in Manchester.

As for De Ligt, the young centre-back is wanted by many of Europe’s biggest clubs, and seems set to depart Ajax this summer.

Man Utd 'to battle Liverpool for England winger'

Manchester United have entered the race to sign Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi, according to reports.

Hudson-Odoi, 18, made his England debut in the 5-0 win over Czech Republic on Friday, but is yet to start a Premier League game for Chelsea and has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge.
