Chandrapur: The show of strength by BJP candidate, minister of state for home Hansraj Ahir, and his rival Sena MLA-turned-Congress contestant Suresh (Balu) Dhanorkar brought traffic to a standstill in the city on the last day of filing nominations for Chandrapur-Arni-Wani Parliamentary constituency on Monday.
Aggravating the situation was another rally by supporters of advocate Rajendra Mahadole of Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi.
On the final day, 19 nominations were filed. Mahadole, who filed his nomination for the second time on the last day, led a rally from Gandhi Chowk to collector’s office. Ahir’s rally started from front of Patel School at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk before passing through Gandhi Chowk and Jatpura gate en route the collector’s office.
Dhanorkar, who had to rush to file nominations as cops had allotted him 1.30pm slot, was followed by a sizeable mob.
Brushing aside talks of factionalism in Congress, Dhanorkar told media that he would manage to get veteran leader Naresh Puglia’s backing despite presence of Brahmapuri MLA Vijay Wadettiwar on his side. He sounded confident of his win by claiming that Ahir could not bring development and employment.
Ahir, who was accompanied by state finance minister Sudhir Mungantiwar, minister of state home (urban) Dr Ranjit Patil and MLAs from five assembly segments, said his winning streak would continue. “There are lakhs of people in the constituency who have been benefited due to our efforts,” said Ahir who filed four forms.
Mungantiwar said Mahayuti would win 48 seats in the state on the virtue of developmental works done so far.
Bahujan Mukhti Party’s Gautam Nagrale, Nav Samaj Paksha’s Vidyasagar Kasalrawar, Bahujan Samaj Party’s Sushil Wasnik and some independent candidates too filed their nominations on the last day.
