A Bonus Worth Half of Opponent's Total Pay: NCAA Number of Day
(Bloomberg) -- $225,000.
That’s the bonus Florida State basketball coach Leonard Hamilton received when the Seminoles clinched a spot in the NCAA tournament’s Sweet 16. The sum is more than half the $400,000 base salary for Murray State head coach Matt McMahon, whose team lost to Hamilton’s on Saturday.
Hamilton’s contract, extended in 2017 and obtained through open-records requests, is heavy on incentives. His $2.25 million base salary is fairly average, but he’s already received $675,000 in bonuses this season. Should the Seminoles keep winning, he’ll see hefty rewards for an Elite Eight appearance ($250,000), a Final Four showing ($275,000), a finals berth ($150,000) and a national championship ($500,000).
Of the 14 public-university coaches still remaining in the men’s tournament, only Hamilton and North Carolina’s Roy Williams ($150,000) received Sweet 16 bonuses over $100,000, according to USA Today. Kentucky coach John Calipari received $0 -- the only bonuses in his contract are academic related. (Contract information for Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski and Gonzaga’s Mark Few is private.)
