A software engineer from Australia has approached the police to track down his Indian girlfriend who allegedly promised to marry him but instead is on the run after borrowing ₹25 lakh from him.
Based on a complaint by Simon J. Burton on March 22, the police on Friday registered an FIR against Sangeetha S., 32, a resident of HSR Layout. She has been charged with cheating, extortion and criminal breach of trust.
Burton works for a multinational IT company which has offices at Manyata Tech Park. He met Sangeetha in 2014 during one of his visits to Bengaluru.
“The two became friends. The complainant said that in February 2015, Sangeetha proposed to him and promised to marry him,” said the police. During their courtship between 2015 and 2018, Sangeetha would often ask him for money, and in three years, Burton claims to have given her a total of ₹25 lakh.
“He transferred the cash from his salary account to her account,” said the police.
Burton realised something was amiss when Sangeetha suddenly stopped taking his calls and her mobile phone was switched off. When he contacted the Bengaluru office, he learned that Sangeetha had left her job a few months ago.
The Sampigehalli police are on the lookout for Sangeetha.
