The Nissan Stelvio Zagato Looks Like It Came From Mars And Landed On Earth

The Nissan Autech Zagato Stelvio AZ1 is perhaps one of the strangest vehicles ever to come out from a Japanese automaker.

The sports coupe was built by Nissan subsidiary Autech and designed by Italian coachbuilder Zagato. While it’s based around the Nissan Leopard, also known as the Infiniti M30, production of the Autech Zagato Stelvio was capped to just 104 units worldwide. One of these examples is currently for sale on eBay and located in Philadelphia.

It is the unique bodywork of the 1990 Autech Zagato Stelvio which immediately makes it stand out from any other Nissan or Zagato product. The front incorporates a weird fascia with a small front grille while the hood and front quarter panels are dominated by huge bulges housing the wing mirrors.

Yes, this coupe from 1990 didn’t have traditional wing mirrors and hit the market three decades before models like the Audi e-tron SUV followed suit without wing mirrors on the doors or A-pillars.

The weird looks continue at the side with thin B- and C-pillars as well as hub caps which incorporate NACA ducts into their design. If you can look past the curious design, you’ll be pleased to know that the Zagato Stelvio is powered by a punchy V6 engine delivering 280 hp mated to a four-speed ZF transmission.

This particular example is chassis number 56 and has 72,000 miles (115 km/h) under its belt. Despite that, the asking price sits at $49,500, meaning you could buy a lightly-used BMW M2 for roughly the same.

It may not be cheap but it is unique and that has to count for something, right?
