Surat: The Surat BJP workers are miffed over city-based realtor demanding ticket from Surat Lok Sabha constituency.
Mahesh Savani, a realtor and a social worker had recently met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah in New Delhi and expressed his desire to contest the LS polls from Surat on BJP ticket.

City BJP leaders believe that because of Savani, the name of candidate for the Surat seat has not been announced yet by the party top brass.

There have been only a few contenders for the seat including sitting MP Darshana Jardosh, city BJP president Nitin Bhajiyawala and former city mayor Ajay Choksi. Jardosh had won the seat in 2014 by margin of 5.33 lakh votes.

“I have requested BJP for ticket from Surat seat if party’s top leadership deems fit. If party is looking for a person from Saurashtra, I am willing to contest election,” Savani told TOI.

Savani is a real estate developer while his family also runs educational institutions in the city. He is mostly known for marrying off orphan girls by organising mass marriages.

Sources said that Savani was also initially supporting Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) in Surat. He had also acted as a mediator between PAAS leaders and state government. Another source said that Savani was one of the organizers of the programme of Patidar community where BJP president Amit Shah was not allowed to speak.

“Any person whom party selects to represent Surat will win, irrespective of his name or stature,” said Pravin Naik, former Rajyasbha MP and former city BJP president.
