NEW DELHI: Sudha Satyan was settling in her seat, looking forward to a comfortable journey on Air India’s long flight from Delhi to Chicago on Sunday. But when the captain’s name was announced, she had a flashback. About 30 years back she used to run a play school in Mumbai and had asked a 3-year old his name. “Captain Rohan Bhasin,” the child had promptly replied amid pearls of laughter from the teacher and both the parents who happened to be senior pilots with erstwhile Indian Airlines (now AI).

So when Satyan heard “Captain Rohan Bhasin” again after so many years on the Chicago flight on Sunday, she requested the airhostess to meet the pilot. Once the flight got airborne and everyone was settled, the young captain came to meet her. And he did turn out to be the same person who had prefixed his name with Captain while appearing for a play school interview.

The two hugged and there were tears of joy. Captain Bhasin’s mother, Captain Nivedita Bhasin, later took to Twitter with a collage of young Rohan’s picture with Satyan taken in 1990 or 1991 and a picture taken on the aircraft on Sunday. “#WarmsTheCocklesOfMyHeart.... During Playschool admission, the teacher asked my son his name. Nonchalantly he answered, ‘Capt Rohan Bhasin’. And he was just 3. And today, the same teacher was enroute to Chicago. And he was indeed the Captain. 🤗👨‍✈️#StudentTeacherReunion❤️” she tweeted.

The play school meet happened in Mumbai in 1990 or 1991 when Rohan’s parents had moved there. “Sudha Satyan’s husband was an engineer with AI and the families loved together. Sudha ran a play school called ‘Mrs Satyan’s Playschool’,” said AI oldtimers.

The Bhasin couple was later transferred to Delhi. Rohan started pilot training after Class 12 and joined an airline as co-pilot in in 2007. His sister, Niharika, also became a pilot and joined another airline in 2011. Rohan is third generation pilot. His parents — Captains Nivedita and Rohit Bhasin — currently fly AI’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The Bhasin family has five captains — husband, wife, son, daughter and son-in-law. Rohan’s grandfather, Captain Jai Dev Bhasin, was among the first seven pilots in the country to become a commander in 1954. And Rohan’s sister, Niharika, and her husband are captains on the Airbus A320.
