Polls: South Goa police step up vigil to curb illegal liquor sale

South Goa Superintendent of Police Arvind Gawas has said that in view of the upcoming elections, police stations in South Goa have been directed to intensify drive against those illegally storing large quantity of liquor illegally in houses and other private places.

Gawas said, “Salcete police have conducted raids and have seized liquor stored illegally at private places. Strict eye is also kept on those who are in the business of illegally transporting the liquor.”

He further informed that list of anti-social elements has been prepared by all the police stations and proceedings against history-sheeters and anti-social elements have started.

He also said that persons involved in election-related offences have been called at the police stations, and inquiry is being conducted.

Besides this, a drive to check vehicles illegally carrying liquor has also been started and night patrolling has been intensified, he added.

Gawas said that process of depositing arms is almost over. He said that there are about 1900 arms in South Goa and process of depositing the arms was carried out by all the police stations in South Goa.

In order to ensure free, fair and peaceful conduct of the election process in the South district, there is complete ban on carrying of all types of arms and fire arms and lethal weapons within the district, and the process of getting the arms deposited is almost
over.

Arms licence holders in South Goa were directed to deposit all their fire arms at the nearest police stations in their respective jurisdiction, he said.
