Sunita, a mother of four, believes the poor and the downtrodden are being heard more during the Modi (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) regime.
“I will vote for whoever stands from his [Mr. Modi’s] party in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections,” says Sunita.
She worked at an electronics company at IMT Manesar before being laid-off, along with 300-odd workers, without any prior notice in 2015.
“The company pasted a notice just five minutes before our shift ended at 3.30 p.m. and laid off 310 people without assigning any reason,” recalls the 35-year-old.
She and the other dismissed workers held a hunger strike outside the company’s premises for more than a month, ran to offices of politicians, but to no avail. She could not even find a new job.
“The previous employer made sure that we did not get any job in the industrial township. The poor are never heard,” laments Sunita.
Financial troubles
Her life has not been easy after she lost the job. Her husband owns an agricultural land measuring over an acre in Pataudi and is a tenant farmer. After Sunita was fired, the family struggled to make both ends meet. She says that it became difficult for them to get even two square meals a day and pay school fees. Now she complements her family’s income by working as a tailor in her spare time.
She, however, feels that Mr. Modi is fighting for the nation and has done a good job. “Modi banned currency notes. It made even the rich stand in queues and realise the hardships faced by the poor. They got to know what it is like to be poor,” says Sunita.
She, however, knows little about the trade unions accusing the government of diluting labour laws. She believes that the “achhe din” for the poor are here.
‘Modi a nationalist’
The Opposition’s slogan — “chowkidar chor hai” — has failed to catch her fancy. Mr. Modi is not “chor”, she says emphatically, adding that he is a “nationalist”. “Whatever he did, he did it for the poor. It is difficult to believe that Modi is involved in any corruption. It seems the Opposition is not left with any agenda and is lying to fool the people,” says Sunita.
