A flying squad seized ₹73.50 lakh from a vehicle carrying cash from different banks for filling up automated teller machines (ATMs) in the town on Monday.

An official said that the money was seized after those manning the vehicle could not give proper accounts of the cash they were carrying. After some discrepancies were noted in the amount for which they showed documents and the actual amount of cash carried, the flying squad moved the vehicle to the Sivakasi Tahsildar office.

The money was later handed over to the Sivakasi Revenue Divisional Officer who, in turn, ordered depositing the cash in the treasury. This is the single major seizure made in the district after model code of conduct came into force.
