VIJAYAWADA: In a first, a trans woman filed her nomination papers for Mangalagiri assembly constituency as an independent on Monday.

Tamanna Simhadri would be fighting big names like Nara Lokesh of the TDP and Alla Ramakrishna Reddy of the YSR Congress.

The 34-year-old candidate, a native of Vijayawada, explains that she looks up to Shabnam ‘Mausi’ Bano of Madhya Pradesh as her role model.

Tamanna claims that other political parties like Jana Sena did offer her support but later she refused citing that she did not want to isolate herself within ‘four walls’ in a party.

While facing major political opponents, Tamanna did not mince words in attacking her opponents.

“On what right does Nara Lokesh contesting from Mangalagiri. This place is crucial for Amaravati and first Lokesh has a moral responsibility to resign from his MLC post before contesting as MLA,” Tamanna said.

She even claimed that Lokesh was contesting from this constituency to ‘grab lands’. She also advocated that other transgenders should contest from across all the constituencies to empower themselves and protect the rights of others like them.
