THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Af ter a long delay over its Pathanamthitta candidate, the BJP finally announced the name of K Surendran. The firebrand leader, who was in the forefront of the Sabarimala agitation was considered the frontrunner in a seat which many consider the BJP has the best chance of winning in Kerala.

The BJP central election committee on Saturday announced Surendran's candidature, ending speculation that the party's state president P Sreedharan Pillai could be given the seat or that the Pathanamthitta candidate's fate was linked to who would contest from the BDJS's allotted seat in Thrissur.

Surendran had unsuccessfully contested twice from Kasaragod Lok Sabha seat and Manjeswaram Assembly seat. Last time in 2016, however, he lost the election by a whisker. Following the announcement, Surendran was visibly jubilant, while Sreedharan Pillai said Surendran would script history. "Surendran is a popular leader of BJP. He will make history'', he said.
