KANPUR: The 128-year-old Sisamau nullah — notorious for dropping effluents from Kanpur city into Ganga for past several decades — has finally been tapped. Sewage from the drain is now being diverted to the effluent treatment plant in Jajmau.

The untreated sewage from 16 Kanpur drains had been directly flowing into Ganga for decades. The river pollution unit has controlled the 140 MLD of waste by distributing the load among pumping stations. “The river pollution unit first controlled around 80 MLD effluentsby establishing a pumping station at Baqar Mandi,” said R K Agarwal, general manager of River Pollution Control Unit, Jal Nigam. “The remaining 60 MLD was stopped at VIP Road pumping station, further diverting the nullah to Jajmau CETP (common effluent treatment plant),” he added.

The National Mission for Clean Ganga, under the Prime Minister’s flagship Namami Gange programme, had sanctioned projects worth Rs 2,192 crore for the Kanpur zone to prevent flow of sewage water into Ganga. So far, 13 drains have been tapped and work on stopping the flow of sewage water into Ganga from three other drains is underway, said Agarwal. Environmentalists have hailed the move.
