Prove my wife carried 2kg of gold, TMC MP tells Customs
Monotosh Chakraborty, Rohit Khanna | TNN | Mar 25, 2019, 04:22 ISTKOLKATA: TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee on Sunday said the Customs’ allegations against his wife were not only false but politically motivated. Banerjee said his wife was born in Bangkok and has a Thai passport and she is also a PIO (Person of Indian Origin) card-holder. He even challenged that if the Customs could respond to five posers raised by him, he would quit politics.
TOI had reported on March 24 that police here have initiated a probe into two complaints, the first lodged a week ago by a TMC MP’s wife against three customs officials and the second lodged on Friday by a customs official against the woman passenger and her companion and cops.
“The Customs complaint bears out the fact that they had randomly selected her for checking based on her movement and profile. What is this profiling? Was it her fault that she is the wife of an MP? Is it a criminal offence?” he said. “Wild accusations are being made that nearly 2kg of gold was found in their possession. I challenge the Customs to prove that even 2gm of gold was found on them. And even if it was found, where are the records? Why were they let off?” the MP said.
Banerjee indicated that he will lodge civil and criminal defamation cases.
