MOHALI: A resident of Bhagindi village in Mullanpur in Mohali district had killed the sambar and skinned him at his farmhouse for meat purposes, according to the wildlife department officials who have summoned him to record his statement.
Chief wildlife warden Kuldeep Kumar on Saturday said teams raided the farmhouse of Soma Singh and learnt that he along with three others is responsible for the killing of the sambar.
Kumar said, “A team of the wildlife department had raided his house, but he had gone out. He has been summoned to record his statement at the range office. If he fails to do so, an FIR will be lodged against him and he will be arrested.”
The wildlife department of Punjab was put on high alert after poaching incidents of endangered species was unearthed in Mohali on Friday. The department was tipped off with photographs showing poachers skinning a sambar.
The department had also recently come across an incident of a wild boar being killed, with its meat being sold at Mullanpur. “Suddenly, poachers have become active in this part of the state, whereas forest areas adjoining Chandigarh remained calm till now. With two poaching incidents surfacing, the teams had been put on high alert to nail the gang operating in the region.”
Kumar said sambar is a Schedule- III animal, according to Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. According to the Act, it is illegal to kill the wild animal and if any such animal is found dead due to any reasons, it must be either reported to nearest police station or to wildlife officers of the area. “Using the animal’s meat is equally punishable under the act. No one can use a dead animal for personal use as it remains government property and has to be disposed of as per guidelines,” he said.
