FEROZEPUR: With the model code of conduct in place due to the ensuing Lok Sabha polls, the event at Hussainiwala memorial in Ferozepur remained a low-key affair as there was no political rally organised by the ruling party to commemorate the martyrdom day of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev.

The busts of martyrs at Hussainiwala memorial this time missed the hustle bustle of the official machinery due to the model code of conduct. However, hundreds of locals thronged the place, who were there to pay floral tributes to the martyrs on their martyrdom day.

Chander Ghaind, DC, Ferozepur, also paid tributes to the martyrs on their 88th martyrdom day. Gaind surprised the people by travelling with them in the special train to reach the memorial. He not only talked with the people during the 10-km journey but also sought their feedback or suggestions towards eliminating drug menace, generating employment and making Ferozepur a clean and green district.

In order to make the people aware the district administration had set up a special corner near the memorial under SVEEP programme and voter-verifiable paper audit trails (VVPATs) machines were exhibited to inform the general public about its functioning. Ghaind said that only VVPAT machines would be used in these general election and the machine dispenses a slip with the symbol of the party for which a person had voted for. The slip drops in a box and the voter cannot take it home.

A signature campaign was also started by the DC to exhort the voters for their massive participation in the voting process.
