NEW DELHI: Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday stepped up his attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi even as he reteriated his demand for full statehood for Delhi.

Addressing a gathering at a function in east Delhi’s Trilokpuri, Kejriwal said: “In 2014, Narendra Modi had said he will give full statehood to Delhi if Delhi elects BJP candidates on all seven Lok Sabha seats. In the last five years, he has done nothing about it.” He also attacked Congress, saying it had promised full statehood in 2004 and 2009, but did nothing.

Calling for a fight for full statehood, Kejriwal said it will give AAP government the power to do as much work as it wants. “In the last four years, we have done more work than what was done in the last 70 years. The other governments couldn’t do so because they were busy filling their pockets. The PM created a lot of obstructions in our work due to political enmity. Delhi government needs to take permission from Centre for any kind of work. All other states have become full states, but Delhi continues to be a half state. Where does Delhi lack? What is our fault,” he questioned.

Before the meet at Trilokpuri, Kejriwal addressed people at Malviya Nagar, stressing on full statehood there as well. “It is an insult and injustice against which we need to fight. All work that I want to do can be done only after Delhi becomes a full state,” he said, adding he would have stopped sealing within 24 hours in the city if Delhi was a full state.

“I sought permission from PM to open new colleges and university four years ago, but I am yet to get the permission,” the CM said.
