MOHALI: Congress supporters allegedly attacked SAD councillor in Lalru municipal council (MC) while he was watching a kabbadi match at Dappar village on Sunday.

Balkar Singh Rangi suffered head and neck injuries. He was taken to civil hospital, Derabassi, from where he was referred to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh.

Police said the attack was a fallout of two-month-old rivalry over changing political stands.

Lalru police station house officer inspector Gurcharan Singh said 12 to 13 persons were booked. “We have booked Gurdeep Singh, Jaggi and Sukhvir Singh by name, while others are yet to be identified. Rangi is a SAD councillor from ward number 2. We are waiting for doctor’s opinion, after which attempt to murder charges will be added to the FIR,” he said.

Sources said Congress supporters led by Gurdeep Singh, Jaggi and Sukhvir, who were armed with weapons, climbed the stage, where Rangi was sitting, and attacked him.

Zirakpur MLA and SAD district president N K Sharma rushed to the spot and visited the hospital. Sharma said, “An attempt was made to kill Rangi as he was instrumental in motivating others to join SAD. He was already under threat from Congress supporters as they had challenged him two months back and threatened to murder him. We will persuade the police to book the accused on charges of attempt to murder.”

He also accused Congress supporters of suppressing SAD workers and threatening them to join the party.
