U-Lace No-Tie Sneaker Laces will broadly launch its new innovation SafetyLace®, a lace replacement designed specifically as a suicide prevention safety product for the Behavioral Healthcare industry this spring at NatCon19, the National Council for Behavioral Health's Conference in Nashville, TN.

Ligature strangulation events have been on the rise in mental health facilities. U-Lace set out to leverage its expertise in the modular no-tie lace business to innovate a replacement lace product designed specifically for the Behavioral Health, Corrections and Nursing Home industries. While U-Lace was already supplying its Classic and U-Lace Kiddos modular no-tie laces to Behavioral Healthcare facilities across the USA without incident, the company wanted to design a product with the needs of behavior healthcare in mind. The focus was on improving overall facility safety, saving patient lives, protecting other patients, facility staff and visitors while also maintaining patient dignity and minimizing the costs associated with footwear and/or lace replacement.

Said U-Lace CEO and Chief Innovation Officer Tim Talley, “We had a huge task before us on all fronts, but with our already award-winning product – U-Lace No-Tie Laces – we were able to engineer a new product that combines thoughtful engineering with other proven branded products such as Kevlar® thread to create SafetyLace®.”

SafetyLace® was put through rigorous testing by Underwriters Laboratories and testing facilities at individual Behavioral Healthcare facilities.

Also noted by the company is the fact that a pack of SafetyLace® – which is designed to lace a pair of sneakers, casual shoes or boots – is actually nearly on par with the wholesale cost of the equivalent number of packs required to lace a pair of consumer sneakers, casual shoes or boots despite all the additional labor, and material costs including expensive Kevlar thread. “This product is so important that we worked with our manufacturing partners and came to agreement with our ownership team to make the product as affordable as possible to the marketplace.

We’re saving lives here and that’s what matters most.” said Talley. “while we can’t give the product away for free, we can lower profit targets and make the product as affordable as possible in an effort to help as many facilities as possible to be able to provide SafetyLace® to patients in need.

U-Lace has shipped SafetyLace® to dozens of Behavioral Health Facilities in the USA since July 2018 – many placing monthly orders – without incident. The company – which is a certified WMBE Supplier – is now seeking to expand its distribution of the product to the broader Behavioral Healthcare Industry.
