Temperature soars in Mumbai

MUMBAI: It was yet another hot day for the city, as maximum temperatures were seen soaring to 36.7 degrees on Sunday.
This was the highest recorded maximum temperature for the month so far. However over the past few years maximum temperatures recorded in March have been seen crossing 40 degrees mark.

Weathermen from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Mumbai observatory said that a gradual rise in temperatures was expected.

The maximum temperatures recorded by the IMD Santa Cruz observatory was 36.7 degrees Celsius which was 3.9 degrees above normal while in case of IMD Colaba maximum temperatures recorded were degrees 33.5 Celsius which was 1.9 degrees above normal.

Till just a day ago the maximum temperatures recorded by the IMD Colaba and Santa Cruz observatory was 31.5 degrees and 34.1 degrees Celsius respectively. On Saturday weathermen had hinted towards a rise in temperatures over the next few days with the transition period in weather which the city is witnessing from winter into summer.

There was also a change in wind direction from North westerly to westerly in to easterly. The easterly winds are seen coming from the land are seen causing a rise in temperatures.


K S Hosalikar, deputy director general of meteorology at the regional India Meteorological Department, said, that this situation is likely to prevail. Residents said that the heat was unbearable. "The summer has set in its evident. The first half of the month was comparatively pleasant. However we two months of the heat left to go, we only need to get ready for hotter days probably, " said Mulund resident Mithali Dholas.


The minimum temperatures meanwhile recorded on Sunday by the IMD Colaba and Santa Cruz observatory was 24 degrees and 21.4 degrees respectively.


The relative humidity meanwhile recorded by IMD Colaba and Santa Cruz observatory was 55% and 37% respectively.


The highest recorded maximum temperature for the month of March last year was of 41 degrees which was recorded on March 26,2018. The all time highest maximum temperature recorded has been 41.7 degrees which was recorded on March 28,1956.
