JIH recognizes outstanding work of ‘Nagpur Heroes’

Nagpur: Some winners and nominees of TOI’s Nagpur Heroes award, who made a significant contribution to the betterment of society in their own way, were felicitated by the north-west unit of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) on Sunday.
The fifth edition of Nagpur Heroes was held on January 23 in which distinguished services of six persons were recognized and were given awards.
Of the winners, paediatrician Vinky Rughwani, celebrity chef and world record holder Vishnu Manohar, mountaineer Avinash Deoskar (in absentia), Tanveer Mirza, Iqbal Kashmiri, chief of NGO Janakrosh Ashok Karandikar, Moin Quazi and Yusuf Quazi were among those who were felicitated by JIH with the aim of giving them encouragement to carry forward their work and motivate others.
The felicitation ceremony, held at JIH office, Avishkar Colony, Zingabai Takli, was presided by Prof Ayyub Khan. Nazimuddin Ghazi conducted the programme.
Introducing the beneficiaries, Iftikhar Ahmed said, “It is important to recognize the selfless efforts of these eminent personalities who have been working with a passion to help the needy.”
Dr Rughwani said, “All the heroes who were honoured have achieved exemplary feats in their respective fields.” Being founder president of Thalassaemia Society of Central India, Dr Rughwani has been working for the welfare of thalassaemia and sickle cell patients.
“Creating awareness about this disease among people is essential so that they could also lend a helping hand,” he added.
Manohar said he had pledged two years back to provide amenities and education to underprivileged kids. Manohar started off by transforming the life of 16 kids. Now, 34 children are benefited by Manohar’s philanthropy.
Karandikar said, “It is important that awareness is created among people about road safety to reduce the number of accidents.”
He also presented statistics apprising the audience of the high number of accidents and deaths.
Earlier, Khan said, “It is high time for good people to come together and help those who are lending a helping hand to the society.”
