As part of Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation programme (SVEEP), the Dakshina Kannada district administration will organise a human chain along the beach between Talapady and Hejmady on April 7.
Talking to reporters after a meeting here on Saturday with representatives of educational institutions and social organisations participating in the event, Deputy Commissioner S. Sasikanth Senthil and Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer R. Selvamani said that the human chain will cover a distance of about 40 km. This will be in place for about an hour from 4 p.m.
Mr. Selvamani said that there will be about 700 people in a stretch of one kilometre of human chain on the beach. “We hope to get good response for the event,” he said and added that this was one among the new forms of SVEEP activity the committee is trying out.
Mr. Senthil said that while people will be on the beach, ropes, banners and boats will be used in the interweaving gaps of river mouths and in the port area.
Earlier at the meeting, Mr. Senthil asked the team leaders to have enough water points and treatment facilities on the beach. Mr. Selvamani said that the route has been divided into 17 segments. They are creating a document using Google Maps. He said that arrangements for the event were being fine-tuned now.
Mangaluru City Corporation Commissioner Mohammed Nazeer said that nearly 4,000 personnel from the corporation will be working as volunteers.
