A 12-year-old girl allegedly ended her life at her Nagpada residence on Friday night.
According to the JJ Marg police, the incident occured between 9 p.m. and 9.30 p.m. on Friday in the Temkar Mohalla in Nagpada. The police said that the victim, Gulshan Sheikh, was alone in the house at the time.
“The girl’s father runs a catering business one lane away from their residence and her mother is a homemaker. The mother had stepped out for some work in the night and when she returned with her brother, Gulshan did not open the door despite repeated knocking and calling out to her. Her mother then opened the door with a spare key kept with a neighbour, and found that Gulshan had killed herself,” senior police inspector Shirish Gaikwad, JJ Marg police station said.
Gulshan was rushed to JJ Hospital where she was declared dead before admission. The JJ Marg police were informed and a team was sent to the hospital to conduct inquiries.
No motive so far
The police have recorded statements from Gulshan’s parents and other family members. However, no possible motive has come to light so far.
“We searched the house and did not find a suicide note. Inquiries with her family, too, have not revealed any recent incidents that might have led Gulshan to take her own life,” Mr. Gaikwad said.
The police will next week begin inquiries at her school and in her friend circle to find out whether she was facing problems with her studies, or if she had confided in a friend about having suicidal thoughts. Inquiries will also be made with Gulshan’s two younger brothers with the help of women officers and counsellors, if needed.
The police have so far not found any signs of forced entry into the house, struggle or other clues pointing towards foul play. “We have registered an accidental death report in connection with the incident and are conducting further inquiries,” Mr. Gaikwad said.
