NEW DELHI: The decomposed body of a 12-year-old boy who was missing since March 11 was discovered in northeast Delhi's Karawal Nagar area on Friday evening. Local residents spotted the body floating in a drain and identified it as that of the missing boy. A 22-year-old youth was later arrested for killing the boy.
DCP (northeast) Atul Thakur said that Harvender alias Nanhe had confessed to the murder and has been charged with the crime besides being accused of kidnapping. A case had been registered on March 12 at Karawal Nagar police station. The investigators are awaiting the autopsy reports to see if the boy was sexually assaulted.
The boy’s mother told the cops that she had last seen him around 7.30pm on March 11. She had then gone to visit her relatives, but on returning home found that her son had still not come home. The family searched for the boy in the locality with no success. The following day, his relatives approached the Karawal Nagar police station.
Based on the family’s suspicions, some people were questioned by the cops, including the accused. However, Harvender feigned ignorance. Police then directed their attention to the neighbouring districts of Uttar Pradesh, though with very little success.
After the body was found and technical surveillance mounted, Harvender was re-summoned for questioning. The cops detected contradictions in his answers, and on sustained interrogation, the youth broke down and confessed to the murder. Harvender told the cops that he had moved out of the locality, but on March 11 had run into the boy and taken him to an eatery. He told the boy that he wasn’t carrying money to pay the bill and asked him to accompany him to his room.
Before leaving with the youth, the boy returned home to leave the house keys with his younger sister and told her that he was going to Nanhe’s house. The accused took the boy to the drain, strangled him and dumped the body there. He left the spot, but kept in touch with the victim’s family, hoping to extract ransom money from the youngster’s father. To ward off suspicions, Harvender went out with the group that searched for the missing boy.
The local people staged a protest and blocked the road to Karawal Nagar after the discovery of the kid’s body. The protesters demanded justice for the boy and pelted stones at the cops. Senior officers had to go to the spot to assuage the family.
