Hubballi: As Hubballi-Dharwad mourn victims of building crash, the tragedy has cast a shadow on celebration of Holi, a major festival in the twin cities. Moved deeply by the magnitude of the unfortunate incident, a majority of people have decided not play with colours this year.

Every year Holi is celebrated in the twin cities for five days. This year it was from March 21 to 25. While people of Dharwad play with colours on the second day of the full moon day, in Hubballi it is on the last day which is called Ranga Panchami. But this year, owing to building crash and untimely death of minister C S Shivalli, the festival has been a low key affair. Kiran Hiremath, admin, Dharwad Bonds Facebook page, said original residents of Dharwad hardly played with colours this time and there were no revellers on streets. “Only outsiders, students and some apartment dwellers were seen celebrating the festival. But in market areas the festival was low key affair. There used to be huge celebration at the Amingad Cold Drinks and rain dance at Sangam Talkies Circle. But this year all those events were cancelled,” he added.

Kulkarni Vijaya, an entrepreneur, who led a team of about 20 volunteers that served the rescue team with food and mineral water, said most Dharwadians are aggrieved directly or indirectly by the crash. Expressing solidarity with the families of victims, people decided against celebrating Holi this year, she said.

It is likely that the festival of colours is going to be a simple affair in Hubballi too since many organisations have decided not to celebrate in it in a grand manner on Monday. “We had plans to organise ‘Hubballi Halagi Habba’. However, we cancelled it after the building crash and death of minister Shivalli,” said Mahesh Tenginakai, key organizer of the event.

Advocate and writer Shankar Halagatti said that when he posted on Facebook saying ‘No Holi this time,’ he got overwhelming response from his friends who also decided not to celebrate the festival of colours this year as they are pained by the tragic incident.
