The Delhi Commission for Women has rescued a 24-year-old woman from Sonia Vihar after her husband approached the commission alleging that her parents had held her captive for the last three years.
“Surekha’s (name changed) husband wrote to the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) stating that her parents had held her captive as they did not approve of the marriage. They were neighbours and got married three years ago. He said that her parents imposed a curfew on her and virtually kept her as a captive in the house. The complainant sought DCW intervention to rescue his wife and unite them,” said a DCW official.
Different religion
Following the complaint, a team of DCW officials and Delhi Police visited the said house. “On reaching the house, officials found the victim in a bad condition and she said that she was frequently beaten up and kept in a room alone. The family’s main grudge was that the man belonged to a different religion. They said they would accept the marriage if he convert to their religion,” the official said.
DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal said, “It is a shame that even in today’s day and age, parents torture their own children and force their will on them. We have seen several cases where parents resort to cruel means like physical abuse, isolation and starvation. The commission shall continue to help such couples in need.”
