LUCKNOW: A youth and a five-year-old boy were charred to death after a high tension wire snapped and fell on their shanty, sparking a fire on Saturday noon in Gosainganj.
According to police, the deceased identified as Jitendra Kumar (22) and his nephew Nishant (5), both residents of Shivlar, Gosainganj, were sleeping in the shanty. Some livestock suffered burns too.
The villagers claimed that the fire broke out after an overhead high tension electric wire snapped and fell on the shanty, sparking a fire in the thatched roof. Police, however, rubbished the claims and said that fire broke out somehow in the thatched roof and engulfed the shanty in which the victims were sleeping. Villagers staged a protest and obstructed probe.
They alleged that they had lodged a complaint about the overhead wire hanging dangerously to the power department but their complaint was not addressed. SHO Gosainganj Vijay Singh said that police were cross-checking the allegation that the fire broke out after an electric wire snapped.
